Straten CSL has expanded its international footprint with the opening of an office in Cape Town, South Africa, through Straten CSL (Pty) Ltd.

The new office establishes a regional base for our UK based aviation consultancy to support renewable energy developers, airports and the wider aviation sector across southern Africa.

We are excited to be working with Wesgro as we enter this market. Their support is helping us bring our international aviation experience to the region and build relationships with local businesses and stakeholders.

Supporting wind and solar development

Our immediate focus is supporting renewable energy developers with aeronautical studies for wind farms and glint and glare assessments for solar projects.

Early aviation assessment helps developers understand potential constraints before committing to a site layout. Our studies consider how proposed developments could affect aircraft operations, flight procedures, radar and other aviation infrastructure. Where an impact is identified, we help develop practical, proportionate solutions.

For solar developments, our glint and glare assessments examine potential reflections affecting aviation operations and other relevant receptors. The findings can inform project design, mitigation and stakeholder engagement.

Bringing our wider aviation capability to the region

Alongside our renewable energy services, the Cape Town office provides access to Straten CSL’s wider consultancy capability, including:

  • Aviation feasibility, safeguarding and operational impact assessments.
  • Radar and communications, navigation and surveillance assessments using specialist modelling.
  • Obstacle limitation surface assessments and advice on development heights and temporary cranes.
  • Instrument flight procedure feasibility, impact assessment and mitigation planning.
  • Airspace design support, operational analysis and fast time simulation.
  • Airport development advice, runway and declared distance studies.
  • Air traffic management strategy, safety assurance, safety cases and operational readiness.
  • Aviation stakeholder engagement, independent technical review and safeguarding training.

We will continue to support Cape Winelands Airport and look forward to working with airports, air navigation service providers, developers and public authorities across the region.

International experience with a local presence

John van Hoogstraten, Managing Director and Founder of Straten CSL, said:

“Opening our Cape Town office is an important step in the growth of Straten CSL. It gives us a local presence from which to build relationships and bring our international experience to projects across southern Africa.

“Having started my aviation career in South Africa, this expansion also has personal significance. We are excited to be working with Wesgro and look forward to contributing to the region’s renewable energy and aviation ambitions.”

With Cumbria as our home base and Cape Town extending our regional presence, our approach remains grounded in operational aviation experience and technical analysis. We provide clear advice and evidence to support safe aviation operations alongside responsible development.
